What Makes Yoga Therapy Different?
Yoga therapy is a specialized application of yoga techniques and principles aimed at improving health and wellness on a deeper, more individualized and therapeutic level. While personal yoga practices, group yoga classes, and yoga therapy share the same roots in traditional yoga philosophy and techniques, their approaches and outcomes differ.
Yoga classes are typically designed to cater to group settings with an emphasis on physical fitness, flexibility, or mobility. By contrast, yoga therapy is tailored to address an individual’s specific health challenges. It can easily be integrated with other healthcare modalities, such as physical therapy, psychotherapy, or medication.
A yoga therapist works one-on-one to create personalized programs based on an individual’s needs, which can be adjusted over time. This therapeutic approach combines aspects of modern medicine, anatomy, and physiology with traditional yogic techniques, such as movement, breathing, and meditation. The result is holistic physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness and healing.

What Are the Benefits of Getting Yoga Therapy Training?
Yoga therapy training offers a range of benefits for those interested in deepening their understanding of yoga as a therapeutic tool. Whether you already work in the health field or not, yoga therapy gives you the ability to assist others in achieving better health and wellness. Key benefits include:
- Personalized Techniques: Yoga therapy training equips you to provide customized yoga practices tailored to individual needs, no matter what physical or mental health conditions a client is facing. Rather than simply treating a condition, you can take into account a client’s unique self, medical history, physical capabilities, and more. This ability to personalize yoga therapy makes the practice more effective and relevant for clients with specific wellness goals or health concerns.
- Holistic Understanding: Yoga therapists gain a deeper understanding of the holistic nature of yoga, learning not just about physical postures, but also about the integration of mental, emotional, and spiritual health. This approach is vital in addressing the whole person, which is at the core of yoga therapy.
- Improved Health Outcomes: With a focus on holistic health and therapeutic applications, yoga therapists can help improve health outcomes for individuals with a variety of conditions, such as chronic pain or diseases and mental health issues. This training enables practitioners to safely integrate yoga therapy into a wide variety of treatment plans.
- Empowerment and Self-Care: Yoga therapy training will not only benefit your clients, but will also empower you to manage your own health and well-being more effectively.
- Community Building: Becoming a yoga therapist allows you to participate in a community that supports healing and wellness. At Breathing Deeply, you receive lifetime access to our exclusive online community of students, graduates, and teachers. This gives you a platform to share knowledge, ask questions, support your individual growth, and make connections with other yoga therapists throughout your career.

Our Foundations of Yoga Therapy Training
Our Foundations of Yoga Therapy Program can be completed in just one year, establishing your knowledge and skills in yoga therapy.
The Foundations Program consists of:
- 50 pre-recorded lectures
- Coursework
- Assignments and online social network
- Live Q&As with head teacher and Breathing Deeply creator, Brandt Passalacqua
- 3 virtual/online learning retreat modules
- Hands-on experience with other students
Since I became a yoga therapy student with Breathing Deeply, I have learned so much about the healing power of our own bodies and breath and how much we can improve our own lives and the lives of those around us, utilizing all the different aspects of yoga.
One shift in my teaching is that now, I am more likely to use all the different aspects of yoga instead of just focusing on asana.

Our Advanced Yoga Therapy Training and Certification
Students who complete the Foundations Program have the option to go through our Advanced Yoga Therapy Program. This program is typically completed in a year. Students are able to earn the highest level of yoga therapy certification (C-IAYT) upon completion of our training.
The Advanced Program is made up of three parts:
- The Foundations of Yoga Therapy Program
- 8 week-long live virtual learning modules
- Mentored practicum in the community
The program exceeded my expectations! My original plan was to just take the Foundations program but it is such a good program that I continued to pursue my C-IAYT as well as the Meditation Mentor certification through Breathing Deeply.
Potential yoga therapy students should know that the Breathing Deeply program has knowledgeable, skilled, and dedicated teachers and staff and a supportive community network of yoga therapists willing to help you along your journey as a student and a practitioner. The program is well-delivered, organized, and you will finish feeling fulfilled.
